RUTH BADER GINSBURG
This piece is in the Artivism Art Show, my RBG piece direct link
Brief
Create a work of art in any medium that relates to social justice for you.
Concept
This is an illustration of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I chose RBG to go with the social justice theme. It includes her original quotes and uses type as design. It also uses the web colors RGB, (Red, Green, and Blue) as a play on her name RBG. She co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the ACLU. Being a lawyer and judge and dedicating her life to empowering women makes her the ultimate figure of Women’s Rights in the US. She was dedicated, hardworking, and won case after case in the Supreme court and state-level changing the lives of women forever. I created this illustration as a tribute to her life and her recent passing.
MATTEL
Brief
Design or redesign Mattel dolls to showcase your illustrator and photoshop skills. Include your process with mood boards and sketches.
Concept
I researched Enchantimals dolls and created a new doll that doesn’t exist yet. Using Illustrator, I drew Cam with her chameleon. I added textures on the clothing and creature to demonstrate different materials such as cotton, leather, and plastic. Her shirt is made of cotton, her skirt and shoes are made out of leather, and the bottom of her skirt is plastic. I wanted the textures of her outfit to match the textures and qualities of the chameleon and showcase her bold and unique nature. The textures of her shoes match her skirt. The eye on her shirt represents the chameleon’s eye. Her makeup also matches the colors and style of her shirt. I created this project in less than two weeks.
PROCESS
Brief
Design or redesign Mattel dolls to showcase your illustrator and photoshop skills. Include your process with mood boards and sketches.
Concept
I was inspired to design my own version of Hello Kitty disco themed dolls in Illustrator. I used elements of the dance space in my design. I added disco balls on her skirt and shirt and the disco floor to her hat using gradients. The small Hello Kitty doll has a disco ball in her bow and is pointing her finger up ready to dance. Her dress also has a disco ball on it. I wanted them to have matching outfits. The bright pink color for her hair, boots, and makeup is the same as Hello Kitty’s bow. I created this project in less than two weeks.
PROCESS
PHOTOREALISM
GLASS BOTTLE
Brief
Choose an object and take a photo of it. Use the mesh tool in illustrator to draw a photorealistic image and add a shadow. Use gradients, textures, blurs, and other effects. Place it in the magazine template for presentation. Add headline text.
Concept
I chose a green glass bottle for my object because I wanted to draw glass and I thought the green color would be more interesting. I divided the bottle into sections and created various gradient meshes to complete the illustration. Highlights and lowlights were added on top of the object to create depth. I also used textures and blurred sections to create softer edges. The grain texture added dust on the top of the bottle to match the image.
CANDY GAME APPS
Brief
Illustrate one app for each day of the week based on a theme using Illustrator. Sketch thumbnails, create concepts, and name the apps. Include gradients in your design.
Concept
I chose to draw game apps based on gummy candies. I used bright colors and gradients on almost each section and background.
SINS
Brief
Pick one of the seven deadly sins and draw an illustration that represents it. Use previously determined color palette based off of analogous colors, triads, or complementary colors. Make rough sketches and draw your design using Illustrator.
Concept
1. I chose Sloth and I was inspired by the Coronavirus. I wanted to include every single activity a person who would be considered a sloth would partake in and drew a self-portrait within this world. I chose neutral tones that enhanced the lifeless qualities. I drew each item in extreme detail in Illustrator.
2. I chose Gluttony, my favorite sin because of how much I love eating, especially sweets. I wanted it to be an entire display of all types of sweets. At first it had a plain background, but then I added the pink color and border to frame the piece. The three colors in the title and in the ice cream cones are a triad. I also drew these treats in extreme detail in Illustrator. I added a donut to the O letter in the title Gluttony to connect to the donuts on the bottom of the page.
